Sketchbook Silliness is BACK! (Sort of)

on January 24, 2025
Posted In: Uncategorized

I paused this webcomic back in 2020 when covid scrambled everyone’s eggs. Although moderately successful, the comics had not been earning me much income. Also, as our culture got more tumultuous I became interested in doing serious Christian comics, to try and speak into the madness. If I threw a Christian comic into the mix, those comics would often be among my most popular. But you can’t get away with that for too long with a comic that has “Silliness” in the title.

So I hit “pause” on Sketchbook Silliness to focus on my freelance work, sort out what I wanted to do with my comics, and just try to keep my business alive.

In 2023 I launched a new webcomic called Narrow Road Comics. It’s a serious Christian comic, a mixture of biblical themes and commentary on our modern culture. I post infrequently, focusing on quality over quantity. But I’ve seen some moderate success. A few of the comics have also gone viral with one recently gaining millions of views.

Still, I do miss drawing silly jokes and gags. As people tire of the culture wars, I think there is an appetite for plain old humor without any politics or agenda. Laughter really is good medicine.

So, I’ve decided to revive Sketchbook Silliness, sort of. I don’t have a lot of free time to spend on comics but every once in a while I plan to doodle up a silly gag just for fun. Sketchbook Silliness is still alive. Think of it as a relative who lives far away but will pop in for a brief visit once in a while.

I invite you to follow me on X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

I’m Hitting PAUSE

on November 6, 2020
Posted In: Uncategorized

You may have noticed I haven’t been producing much webcomic art during the pandemic. The shutdowns dealt a serious blow to my “day job” running an illustration studio and I’ve had to play catch-up. Thankfully I’m still making a living drawing but during covid I’ve had little free time for webcomics (which have been mostly just for fun since they were actually losing me money).

The time off has given me the chance to really think about the future of my webcomics. Even before Covid hit my webcomics were gradually becoming less about silly jokes and more about thoughtful Christian messages. My faith is a big part of who I am those are the comics I most enjoyed. Some of them were also among my most popular. If and when I resume making webcomics, I think I may want to steer more in that direction.

For now I’ve decided to officially pause Sketchbook Silliness while I sort out what future, if any, I have making webcomics. I need to figure out a way to make webcomics that are either profitable, or more spiritually meaningful, or (ideally) both. In the mean time feel free to browse the archive and share any comics you’d like with your friends.

I’ll also be shutting down my Patreon very soon. I want to say a gigantic THANK YOU to all of my Patrons and to everyone who supported my work over the years. If you enjoyed what I did and never chipped in, that’s OK. I’m just glad you enjoyed them. But if you want to you can always give me a tip or buy something from my store here.

Cartoon Face Masks

on April 30, 2020
Posted In: Uncategorized

Pandemics and other medical emergencies can be difficult for children. Seeing everyone wear face masks when they go out in public might be confusing or even a little scary. Children want to see faces. It helps them feel connected and comforted.

I’ve illustrated a series of silly cartoon masks to help take a bit of the edge off during the quarantine. If you have children, or if you just want to show off your sense of humor, give one of these masks a try. They are available for order on Teepublic and Redbubble. The Teepublic masks cost a bit more but include an extra layer of cloth.

Also, these masks are one-size-fits-most so I can’t guarantee they would work on small children. But kids can still laugh when they see the grown-ups wearing them.

My Instagram Has Changed

on January 24, 2020
Posted In: Uncategorized

You follow me on instagram, right? If you do, you need to know about a change.

My Instagram account (@cedrichohnstadt) started as a place to publish my illustrations and sketches, but it was slowly overtaken by my webcomics.

My “day job” is freelance illustration. More and more art directors are browsing Instagram looking for illustrators to hire. When they check me out I want them to see my illustration work. But I also have a lot of regular people who follow me for my webcomics. So, I’ve decided that those two audiences should each get their own Instagram feed.

As of today I’ve changed my instagram account from “@cedrichohnstadt” to “@sketchbooksilliness“. That’s where my IG webcomics now live. I’m still keeping the “@cedrichohnstadt” account but it will only be for my illustration work. Because of Instagram’s rules that username is now locked in limbo for two weeks but I should be able to fire it up again on or around Feb. 7, 2020.

If you already follow my webcomics on Instagram you don’t have to do anything. The link has changed but it appears that Instagram has automatically shifted all of my followers to the new account. If you want to see my illustration work and random stuff from my sketchbook, you’ll have to follow me at  @cedrichohnstadt stating Feb. 8.

I apologize for any hassle this might cause my followers. Hopefully in the long run this will make the experience even better for you. Thanks again for your interest in my work!

My Christian Comics All In One Place

on January 8, 2020
Posted In: Uncategorized

Every once in a while I take a break from the silly jokes and create a serious comic having something to do with my Christian faith. Some of those have been among my most widely shared comics. So, I’ve collected them all onto one page. I’ll try to keep the page updated with new Christian comics any time I make them.

One Million Views

on October 15, 2019
Posted In: Uncategorized

Three weeks ago I started posting my webcomics on TikTok as an experiment, just to see what would happen. After nineteen days I had more followers on TikTok than I had amassed on either Twitter or Facebook, despite being on both of those “legacy” platforms for over a decade.

Then yesterday I shared a cartoon that blew up. When I went to bed last night it had over a half million views and this afternoon it passed the one million views mark!

I am absolutely gobsmacked. I don’t understand it but I’m super grateful. Thanks everyone!

You can follow me on TikTok on this link or by searching for “@doodlemcsketch”.

My most recent webcomic exploded on Imgur yesterday, ultimately rising to the level of “Most Viral” which earned it a spot on the Imgur home page. It topped out at over 6,000 likes and over 191,000 views.

Meanwhile, over on Instagram it got over 22,500 likes from 238,000 views. So cool!

Thanks a bunch everyone!

I’ve Re-Activated My Patreon

on May 20, 2019
Posted In: Uncategorized

A couple of months ago I made the decision to take my foot of the gas and slow down my comic output. Because I didn’t feel right taking money from backers for such a decrease in output, I shut down my Patreon.

I assumed that my Patreon page would still exist, just in a frozen or inactive state. Instead it completely disappeared. This is a problem because most of my cartoons being shared around the internet are stamped with my Patreon URL. If people try to go to that link, they come to a dead end.

So, I’ve reactivated my Patreon. It’s about as scaled-down as you can get but at least it exists. If you want to become a backer and support me, you can. Right now there is only a $1 tier but if you want to give more you can adjust your total before confirming your pledge. Currently I can’t offer you anything more than my sincere thanks. If enough people become backers maybe that will change down the road.

Weather Cartoon for ‘Spider’ Magazine

on May 14, 2019
Posted In: Uncategorized

Spider magazine is published by the Cricket Group for children ages 6-9. They hired me to illustrate a full-page comic for the inside cover of their May-June 2019 issue. The theme of the issue was “weather” and they gave me freedom to come up with anything I wanted related to that theme. I’ve always admired artists who can do wordless or mostly-wordless stories so I thought I’d try my hand at it. Now that the issue is out I can show what I did.

I’m Suspending My Patreon

on February 28, 2019
Posted In: Uncategorized

For over three years now I’ve been drawing fun and thoughtful cartoons. It’s been an experiment of sorts, allowing me to stretch creatively, try new things, and build a larger audience for my work. I’ve had a great deal of fun and enjoyed brief flashes of success with several cartoons going viral.

However, I have so far been unable to find a way to earn a sustainable income from webcomics. I successfully Kickstarted a book, licensed a few cartoons to publishers, and even worked out a small syndication deal, and yet in the grand scheme of things I’ve been losing money. I’ve given hundreds of hours to this project that I could have spent working on growing my freelance illustration business. As a result my freelance income has steadily declined and the webcomics income hasn’t come close to making up the difference.

I turned to Patreon hoping it would help turn things around. The conventional wisdom is that Patreon works best when a creator can provide bonus content for backers. So I worked hard to make exclusive backer-only cartoons, write articles, and deliver other goodies. And it wasn’t working. Instead of earning me more backers, my backers were slowly falling away. I was focusing on quantity over quality and I think it showed.

For me, launching a webcomic has felt like trying to fly a kite on a calm day. Over and over I tossed it up in the air. Every once in a while I would catch a stiff breeze, but eventually the kite kept fluttering back to the ground. I can only do that so many times before concluding that the wind just isn’t with me.

So, I’m pulling back to refocus. I’m not quitting. I still want to make comics. But I’m turning away from artificial schedules and fluffy Patreon rewards to just focus on making good comics whenever time allows. I don’t feel right taking regular payments from backers in exchange for irregular output. Eventually I may come back to Patreon but for now I’m redirecting my energies.

I want to say a ginormous THANK YOU to all of you who have gave your hard-earned money in support of my work. It really means a lot and I’m deeply grateful!

My lovely wife has been close by my side through thick and thin, and somehow puts up with all of my craziness. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, here’s a collection of cartoons that in one way or another were inspired by something in our marriage.

Finding My Voice

on November 20, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

My webcomics are a personal experiment and can range from the silly to the serious to the spiritual. I’m still searching for what writers call their “voice” or what marketers call the “brand”. It’s that one simple thing that summarizes what my comics are all about and what I’m trying to say.

I wish I knew what that was.

Until I figure it out, I’m aware that some people are thrown by the shift in tone from one comic to another (joke…joke…serious thing…joke….religious thing…). The truth is, the lack of consistency sometimes bothers me too. But I won’t figure out what works and what I’m strongest at unless I first try lots of different things.

In the mean time I’ve doodled up a quick self-portrait sketch for a new intro blurb at the top of the site that I hope will let people know what they are in for. It’s a clunky quick-fix while I figure out just what it is I’m trying to do with these comics.

While I’m at it, if you have any feedback or constructive criticism about my work, please contact me with your thoughts (I don’t allow comments on my posts because it’s too exhausting dealing with all the spam). I spend most of my time alone in a cave so hearing what other people like or don’t like really does help. (I’m not fishing for compliments, just feedback). Thanks!

What’s going on this weekend, you ask? I’ll be in Kansas City, MO for the Fall Cartooning Weekend, sponsored by the North Central Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society (of which I am a long-time member). The main event is an afternoon of speakers on Saturday (Oct. 13) including:
• Eric Scott (artist at Andrews McMeel Universal);
• Richard Graham, (Univ. of Nebraska Professor and author of a new book on Rose O’Neill, Illustrator and inventor of the Kewpie Doll); and
• Keynote speaker Wiley Miller, creator of prize-winning comic strip “Non-Sequitur”.
There will also be a raffle of cartooning books, art, and goodies. The best part is the lectures are FREE and open to the public. If any of you will be in the area, stop on by! More info on the NCS North Central Chapter blog.

NEW! Revamped Patreon Rewards

on October 5, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

I’m very grateful for my Patreon backers and am always looking for ways to make supporting me worthwhile. At the same time, I need to find better ways to earn money with my cartoons. After giving it a lot of thought, I’ve decided to restructure my reward tiers to give more value at *almost* no extra cost, and at the same time increase my cartooning income to something more sustainable.

I’M ADDING MORE STUFF!
If you follow me on Patreon you may have noticed that I’ve started posting more frequently with additional content. It’s a work in progress but my goal is to at least double the number of posts in my feed. It won’t all be artwork – finished cartoons take a lot of time so for now at least, the cartoons will still be released at about the same rate. But I’ll be adding other goodies and fun stuff like sketches, commentary, links, downloads, AMA’s (Ask Me Anything’s), recommended resources, art/writing tips, etc.

I’M ALSO ADJUSTING REWARD TIERS
New Patreon rewards are as follows:

$2 per month
Includes access to my cartoons three days before the rest of the world, plus a sample pack including some of the goodies that higher-level backers get.

$5 per month
Includes exclusive Patron-only cartoons plus full access to my new Patreon feed 2.0 which will now include sketches, commentary, links, downloads, AMA’s (Ask Me Anything’s), maybe a video now and then, etc. You’ll also get early access to my regular cartoons, just like the previous level.

$10 per month
Includes everything above, plus downloads of any digital cartoon content available in my store (books, greeting card memes, etc.) and the ability to suggest drawing prompts each month. You mention a topic and I’ll brainstorm some gags about it!

Podcast Interview: Up and At ‘Em

on October 5, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

During my “day job” as a freelance illustrator I sometimes get hired to work as a courtroom sketch artist. I’ve been at it for about fifteen years and have sketched for some of Minnesota’s highest profile trials during that time including a school shooting, an attempted ISIS recruitment, the kidnapping/death of Jacob Wetterling, and the fight over Prince’s estate, and two police shootings.

Last night I was the featured guest on a popular daily podcast about Minnesota news called Up and At ‘Em. We discussed courtroom sketching, cameras in the courtroom, and Gallagher’s sledge-o-matic (most of the discussion is during the second half of the show). They also gave some love to my webcomics and my book Mostly Nonsense.

Listen here or search for “Up and At ‘Em” (episode #538) on just about any podcast app.

My Latest Cartoon Reached “Most Viral”!

on September 21, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

My most recent Sketchbook Silliness cartoon (“Mohawk”) was posted on various social media yesterday. I was floored to see that it is zoomed up the charts on both Imgur and Reddit, reaching “Most Viral” on Imgur. After about 24 hours the cartoon finally leveled off at over 93,000 views/1,600 likes on Imgur and 189,000 views/18,600 likes on the Reddit’s “Comics” subreddit. If I add in the totals from other subreddits and misc. social media, it got over 300,000 total views!

I’m blown away and I just wanted to share the good news. I also want to say a HUGE thank you to all of my Patreon backers for supporting me! It’s really encouraging to see that sometimes the effort and support are coming together to make something people like.

If you like the cartoon, feel free to help share it further by following me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and/or Tumblr.

One Of My Comics Is a DeviantArt ‘Daily Deviation’!

I post my webcomics on a lot of social media, including the popular art website DeviantArt. I just discovered that recently the above webcomic was selected by DeviantArt to be featured as a Daily Deviation. So far it has over 2,800 views and 150+ comments. I’m blown away. Thanks so much everybody!

I’ve also made prints available on the DeviantArt website (button in the upper right of the page). There are a lot of sizes available but because the comic is so tall and narrow it doesn’t perfectly fit their templates – there will be a lot of white space on the sides. For a nicer fit you can order prints on my website that ARE cropped to fit with even margins all around, but they are only available in one size:

NEW! Prints of one of my most popular webcomics

on May 16, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

“The Great Exchange” is one of my most popular and widely shared webcomics. Several people have asked for prints so I decided to pull the trigger and get some made. I just picked them up today and I’m very happy with how they turned out!

I’ll be selling them this weekend at MSP Comicon in St. Paul, MN. If you’re in the area stop on by and say “Hi!”. If you can’t make it, the prints are also available in my store.

Actual size: 8″w x 19″h (20cm x 48cm). Printed on 80lb stock. Matte finish with just a hint of gloss. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube.

If you’d like to frame it, I recommend this frame on Amazon.

Thoughts on Making Gag Cartoons (Part 1)

on February 20, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

Another artist wrote to ask me for some tips on writing gags. While I feel like I still have a lot of room for growth in that area, that didn’t stop me from making a video with a few thoughts.

This is Part 1, where I share general thoughts about the importance of good writing. In Part 2 I share some tips and techniques for coming up with ideas. Part 2 is only available for Patreon backers. Become a patron for only $1/month and you can instantly watch Part 2, plus get other goodies: http://www.patreon.com/cedricstudio.

Also, here are a couple books on writing comedy that have helped me, with Amazon Links. (Full disclosure: If you click one of the links and then buy something – anything – from Amazon, they will cut me a tiny slice of the sale, at no extra cost to you. It’s another way you can support my work):

We did it! Mostly Nonsense is going to be published! Now I’m busy polishing up the final file to send it off to the printer. No guarantees but if all goes smoothly I’m hoping to have all the books out to everyone before Christmas.

Every Kickstarter backer will get several bonus rewards in addition to the book, including:

CARTOON MEMES – A pack of memes you can use to send well wishes to friends on social media (Happy Birthday, New Baby, etc.)

SKETCHERCISE PDF – 120 of my warmup sketches. These predate Sketchbook Silliness so there are no jokes, but what they lack in humor they make up for in elbow grease.

POSE DRAWING SPARKBOOK PDF – Designed to help you put more life and personality into your drawings. Contains hundreds of drawing prompts and six mini-chapters with thoughts and tips for making your drawings more expressive. A $15 value.

TWO MONTHS OF BONUS CARTOONS – Once every week or two I draw an exclusive bonus cartoon only for my $3 and up Patreon backers. For two months, my Kickstarter backers will get those cartoons too!

The Kickstarter ends at 4:20pm CST tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 7) and then these bonus goodies disappear. If you have friends or followers who might be interested in them please share about Mostly Nonsense before it’s too late. Here’s the link: http://kck.st/2AiVpj0

New Stretch Goal: Exclusive Bonus Cartoons!

on December 4, 2017
Posted In: Uncategorized

Only three days left! Mostly Nonsense is almost 80% funded but we are getting down to the wire, so…New stretch goal!

If we raise $300 by noon tomorrow (Tue.) CST, every Kickstarter backer will get 2 months of exclusive bonus cartoons! Once every week or two I draw bonus cartoons that are exclusively for Patreon subscribers. But now, because you are so awesome, you can get them too!

According to my Kickstarter dashboard the average pledge (including shipping) is $30. That comes out to about ten new backers by noon tomorrow. It still won’t get us over the finish line but it will get us a lot closer. Then, hopefully, we will have enough of a surge during the final two days (which is a common phenomenon) to push us over the top. We can do this! But I need your help. Please spread the word!

Also, current backers can increase their pledge to claim a higher reward. That helps too.

Just point everyone to this link. Thanks! http://kck.st/2AiVpj0

10-Pack ($90) – Save $6/book. (Retailers can use this option or contact me to negotiate larger orders).

Need a Christmas gift for someone who’s hard to shop for? Why not give them some cartoons! I’m hoping to have books shipped to my USA customers in time for Christmas. I can’t guarantee it (there is always the possibility of a delay in printing) but I’m sure going to try!

It’s easy to increase your pledge. Simply go to the ‘Mostly Nonsense’ Kickstarter page and click the “Manage your pledge” button that appears next to your pledge amount.

The Kickstarter for my book of gag cartoons, Mostly Nonsense, is nearing the halfway point and almost 50% funded. • Also, I’ve recorded a promo about Mostly Nonsense for the ComixLaunch Podcast. It should air at some point on their next episode (Ep. #123).

AMA (Ask Me Anything)
• Finally, I’ve set up an AMA (Ask Me Anything) event to promote the book. Got questions about cartooning, illustration, or freelancing? Just type them in and I’ll answer/discuss them on Tuesday, November 28 at 10am EST. Anything is fair game. Fire away!

Kickstarter picked my book as a “Project We Love”

on November 9, 2017

Kickstarter has selected my book of cartoons, Mostly Nonsense, to be featured as one of their “Projects We Love”. Woot!

The campaign is off to a good start. In the first two days we’ve raised over $1,000, over 20% of the goal. But most of the money for a Kickstarter tends to come in during the first few days and the last few days of a campaign so I’m not taking for granted yet that the book will happen. Anything you can do to help spread the word would be appreciated! Just point people here:

“Great Exchange” Prints Now Available

I recently posted a webcomic called “The Great Exchange” that got a lot of likes and shares. A couple of people even asked if it was available as a print? So, I’ve uploaded it to the Society6 website. They are supposed to do very nice prints. (Full disclosure: I’ll earn a buck or two from each sale, so, yay coffee money!). When I made the cartoon I wasn’t thinking about prints so if you want to frame it you might have difficulty finding an off-the-rack frame that’s the right size. Having said that, the print is available in a few sizes.

Patreon Reward Tiers Overhauled

on January 21, 2017
Posted In: Uncategorized

A couple of months ago I set up a Patreon page to help provide a bit of income to suppport my Sketchbook Silliness cartoons. It’s not a charity. I’ve tried to offer rewards that will make supporting me worthwhile.

Unfortunately some of those rewards were stretching me too thin and I think the cartoons have been suffering a bit in quality. So, I’ve overhauled my reward tiers. I’ve dropped some rewards and shuffled others around, but I’ve also made it easier to get bonus cartoons and even added a new reward called “Drawing Prompts By You!”.

For more info or to get in on the action, check out the new reward tiers over on the right side of my Patreon page . Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
